Five Smooth Stones

 1Sa 17:40  And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

David took five smooth stones with him to fight against the giant that fought against the Lord.

But why did he take five smooth stones?

One would have been enough as we have seen later in the book of

1Sa 17:49  And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

Little David went up against the giant and killed him instantly with one smooth stone.

So why the need for five stones?

I believe David didn’t even know the reason but it was prophetically done from God to indicate that their would be no retaliation from the giants family.

In those days if you killed someone it was the sworn duty of his relatives to kill you but David took five stones. One for the Giant and 4 stones which were symbolic for the giants relatives.

Reading in the book of 2nd Samuel beginnining with verse 16 and ending with verse 22, it says,”

2Sa 21:16  And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.

2Sa 21:17  But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.

2Sa 21:18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.

2Sa 21:19  And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew  the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

2Sa 21:20  And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of  great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.

2Sa 21:21  And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him.

2Sa 21:22  These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

These were whom the four stones had represented.

There is a lesson in this for us. When God promises us a victory, it is a complete victory.

If we stay close to Him, He will overcome ALL our enemies.

God will not do a partial work.

Thinking about my own ministry and seeing how God has filled our Church to the point we can not grow any more without another building, this reminds me that I have four more stones and God is not finished yet.
